Late?

Happy Halloween! I hope that everyone is having a great day! How is it the end of the October!? It is crazy to think of!

My grandfather used to leave for work at 5am! When I was a kid I thought dang that man works such a long day. Come to find out he didn’t have to be at work until like 7 and it only took him like half an hour to get to get to work. He liked to get there, talk to people, drink some coffee. I don’t think my grandpa was ever late for work! He instilled the “you are late if you are on time.” in my dad who instilled that in me. For most of my childhood I thought my dad had to be at work at 7:30. Nope! He didn’t have to be there until 8:00, but, like his dad he liked to get there early, drink a beverage (he doesn’t drink coffee) and chat with people. I have always been told and encouraged to leave home to get to work at least 15 minutes if not 30 minutes early. Don’t get me wrong sometimes mornings be morninging at I get to work RIGHT on time. However, generally I prefer to be early. When I am early or on time I jokingly say that I am working on debunking the hispanic stereotype that we are always late!

Ok, I know why all of you are here. You want the results of the last Gute Survey. Ok so for those of you that did not participate in the survey the question was “how many minutes late do you consider late for work?” This is one of the first ones that I have so many follow up questions that I just cannot get answered. I didn’t realize I would have these questions till it came up. Ok without further adu…

Ok 51 people answered my survey. 7 people said 1 minute. I have some other answers I want to put in to this category. I believe these people are saying that if you are supposed to be at work at 8am anything after 8 so even 8:01 is considered late. The other people in this category were the people that said you are practically late if you are on time, or some sort of variation on that. Then we had about 8 people that had my grandpas mentality. They ranged anywhere from 10 to 5 minutes early is on time. 6 people said 5 minutes is acceptable, There was a 6, 7.5 and a 9 minute response. There were 8 response of 10 minutes, three 15, a 16, a 20. There were a couple people that said that their company had a 5, 6 or 7 minute grace period. One person said if you are salary then 45 minutes with flex. Then someone said an hour.

I was very surprised to see some of these large ranges! So some of my follow up questions are

  • What do you do that an hour is acceptable to be late?
  • How many of these people are teachers?
    • are you ok with your students being late to your class?
  • This question was just work, how late are people for friend functions? or church?
    • are there different norms? ideas? thoughts? standards?
  • If you are late, whether that is 5, 10, 30, or 45 do you stay after that amount?

Someone told me “you are right TECHNICALLY 1 minute is late”. I am just really intrigued by the results.

I know how much you guys love to hate these surveys. I do find some of them on social media and then some people send me ideas. So if you have ideas for the next survey please let me know! I hope that everyone has a good and safe Halloween evening!

One response to “Late?”

  1. it is so hard to judge travel time, for driving to work anymore. It seems the earlier I leave, the later I am ..LOL
