Good evening! I hope that everyone is having a great week. I am so ready for this week to be over! We all need a break from each other, teachers from the kids, kids from each other, teachers from each other. All of us! So before I get going on today’s blog my parents wanted to be clear that they did NOT leave me at child haven. They parked on the other side of the parking lot! I mean in a 7 year olds mind that is pretty much driving away! Haha
So Hispanics are a very superstitious people. We have beliefs of why things happen and you are not going to sway us from that belief. For instance I was convinced my entire childhood that if I went outside with wet hair I was going to get sick. I mean in my adult brain now I know that germs are what make you sick but still sometimes if I am out with wet hair and my throat starts to hurt soon after I am like dang I should have dried my hair before I went out the other day!
I woke up with a stye on Monday and my students asked if I watched a dog pee. If my palm itched my dad would say I was going to find money. So if you know much about my family you know we had tortillas at almost every meal. One of the things my dad would always say that would always make me laugh as a kid was if my dad got another tortilla out of the pile and he already had one, he would say that we were going to get company. I know that I would always wait to see who was coming. Sometimes my uncle, aunt or grandparents would stop by and it would blow my mind! I mean as I got older I realized that my family just really liked to go to each other’s houses just to chat or you know coincidences! Haha
The big one though that I still to this day can not explain with science is what we call getting a grano. The translation of it is kinda strange. Let me explain. So if you are craving something and you don’t get it you are going to get a grano. It is sort of like a fever blister kinda thing. Not a full fever blister but like a little bump in your mouth. Usually on your tongue. One of my aunts used to say it all the time when she was pregnant to get us to share. She would tell us that if we didn’t give her a bite her baby was going to be born with one.
Well I tell you this to tell you my story. So I don’t know how many of you know that I play pool on wednesday nights. I play a bit far from home and we don’t start until 7:30. So usually on Wednesdays I stay at work kinda later and then I stop for dinner before pool. So last Wednesday I was on my way to pool and I thought yum chicken I think that I will get some chicken. I went to a golden chick. I love that place. So I walked up all excited for my chicken and I grabbed the door handle and it was locked. They were only doing drive thru. I was like nah I am not about to do that. I was like there was a wing stop back there so I will head that way. So I went back to wingstop. I walk in and there are signs everywhere that say cards only no cash. I was like well hell I have cash. I don’t even have my debit card right now! So I leave all sad that I didn’t get my chicken. By this time it is getting a little closer to when I need to be at pool and I misread the schedule so I had a little drive to get to where I was going. So I head that way and stopped by a little deli. I was not impressed. The bread was soggy and the sandwich was kinda bland. The pickle was soggy. I was just irritated, it wasn’t chicken and it wasn’t even a good sandwich. So I move on with life. A couple days later I woke up with a strange little bump, not quite a fever blister on the front of my mouth. It might have been a coincidence but there is no scientific way to explain it! I don’t know why other than I got a grano! I stopped and got golden chick on Monday and my little bump was gone yesterday when I woke up! So again, maybe it was a coincidence but you won’t convince me it wasn’t because I wanted chicken and I didn’t get it!
What are some superstitions that your family has that you are convinced are real no matter how much science can explain? I hope y’all have a great rest of the week!
