Happy Sunday! It has been such a long time! I know, no excuses just an apology! haha while I was gone I went out of town for the month of July. I came back to town, work school started, then learning school started. I have been going non-stop since! Summer was a good time though, very restful. so much happened in my blog hiatus it might take a few blogs to tell it all. Let’s start with my travels.
This summer was very refreshing! I had a good time. I read 34 books, I took many naps, had brunch with friends, I went to 2 weddings, I drove over 2300 miles, I helped patch a hardwood floor, I tore up carpet, I helped sand a hardwood floor, I helped cut cabinets down to size, I helped put a new floor in a closet, I helped pour concrete, I learned how to use some tools but over all I got to spend a lot of time with my parents. After this summer I have really adopted the “how hard can it be? Boys do it!” mentality, and I actually have SOME of the skills necessary to do them. I am missing some of the tools but that is so minor. My dad knew how to do all of these things because he has done a lot of things in his life.
When I was in high school we had open campus for lunch so we would sometimes end up at peoples houses that lived near the school. One day my friend was telling us that we couldn’t go to their house because they had someone coming to fix the sidewalk from the driveway to their front door. I remember being so baffled that it was happening not only in the middle of a work day but also by some strangers. I asked who was coming to do it in my head thinking like maybe an uncle or something. She told me “oh I don’t know some people my parents hired.” I remember all of my flabbers being ghasted! I asked her “Why doesn’t your dad do it?” she looked at me with just as many of her flabbers ghasted and said “MY DAD!?! HE DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO DO THOSE KIND OF THINGS!!” I remember going home and telling my mom do you believer her dad doesn’t know how to do this stuff. Since my dad did I just assumed all dads did I guess! haha by that time in my life I had “helped” my dad put the sidewalk in the backyard. That is when I realized it wasn’t a dad thing, it was a MY dad thing!
I tell you that to say that this summer when I was learning how to do all of these things it really is because my dad has done so many things. Let’s see some things I learned this summer:
- Having the right tool is half the battle
- Once the paint comes off the saw blades it is time to trade them out.
- Clean your tools after you use them, they last longer.
- Measure twice cut once (sometimes measure 4 times!)
- know your limits, and ask for help when you need it
- Most things aren’t really that easy to break!
- protective eye wear is important
- Don’t forget the power that these “power” tools have. follow safety steps, they are there for a reason
- Don’t be so hard on yourself, sometimes even professionals forget to run the water and gunk caught in the drain.
- keep your helpers fed and happy! (sometimes that is as easy as buying them a head lamp!)
- The harbor freight membership might actually be worth it. You get a free bucket, and those blue tags are deceiving!
- being polite and respectful go a long ways people are doing the best they can
- Being a Karen isn’t bad all the time!
Up till this point I knew my dad knew how to do a lot of things, but the 4 weeks I spent working with him this summer I realized he knows how to do way more than I knew! Now I have this idea that I can do all of it too! I offered to help a friend repair her floors the other day when she said that her house flooded! haha
So if you are thinking that you want to buy me a gift I would like a table saw or a Miter saw or a Jig saw. I feel like I could really up my craft game with one of these! I know they do different things but I have ideas for either of them! haha
Well I am going to go work on some grades. I already got an email from a mom because her child turned in an assignment a week and a half late and I didn’t have her grade instantly updated! My favorite line is “you took extra time to do it, I am going to need extra time to grade it!”. Either way I better go get those updated! haha have a great week!
Side note: I am playing with new blog designs so it might look different in the upcoming blogs!
