Happy Friday! I hope that everyone had a good week! I can tell it is getting warmer outside because the kids smell RIPE! This week I changed seats in class! it makes my heart happy because some kids get big mad. I move kids for different reasons like they won’t stop talking, they are failing, they are lame. π jk jk
so, Lying was one of the fastest ways to get in trouble in my house growing up. My dad always used to say the truth is always better than a lie! Always! I had a really hard time learning that lesson! haha My parents could always tell when I was lying, As I get older I realize I am a HORRIBLE liar! I had a hard time grasping that if I told the truth that I wouldn’t get in as much trouble. Don’t worry it took years but I figured it out! haha
Perhaps because of that l can not stand to be lied to, and if you have ever worked with middle schoolers you know they will lie to your face. I watched a kid throw a pencil across the room and when I called him out he said “Ms I haven’t thrown any pencils”. Or when I watch the kid turn around talk to a classmate for a good 2 minutes and I ask the kid if he can get back to work and finish his conversation later and he says “Ms. I wasn’t even talking!!”
The amounts of time I have been gaslit by a 6th grader would astonish you! For instance this week I had a student that was messing with something in her lap and I asked her what she was messing with and she threw her hands up rolled her eyes and said “I am not playing with anything! gah!” I was like “right… ok maybe I miss read the situation! My bad…” So I let it go. a few minutes later I realize I did NOT misread the situation. So I got up and walked over to her and told her “put it away! like in your backpack” She rolled her eyes again but put it in her backpack and we moved on. Sometime in the next 30 minutes she started turning her chair so her bak was to me. I walked over to her and told her “Humor me. Maybe I am wrong, you know misreading the situation again. Humor me and let me see your phone that is still in your backpack” She looks at me π I look at her π she looks at meπ then she pulls her phone out of her lap (you know how sometimes you can kinda sit on your phone like you put it on the seat under your leg? That is what she had done!) and tells me I will put it away. I told her “no, you had your chance, I am taking it. Your adult can come and get it from the office. I told you 3 times….” she said “No! 2!” “Ok, maybe I told you 2 times but this third time I didn’t tell you I just took it!” She later came to me to tell me she needed it back for medical reasons. (Don’t worry that was not true she was just trying to get me to give it back to her! I confirmed with the nurse!).
A couple class periods later, on the same day, I had a kid that was sitting around doing nothing. I asked him if he was finished with his comic strip (that we worked on for 3 days last week). He said “Yeah I think so, let me check” He sat for another few minutes and I ask again “are you finished?” He shrugged, so I went to the turn in bucket and started looking through it. I started calling out all the people that had turned theirs in. I had one without a name. He said I think that one is mine I said this one is yours? he said yup! So another young lady walked up and said ms that one is mine, it did look more like her handwriting. I looked at him and asked was that yours? he said nah so I called him a liar he just shrugged his shoulders and walked away. He came up to me and asked for another piece of paper to start over!
I want you to know that It is not all bad! The bad stories just seem to be the more interesting. More people wanna hear those! but I do have great conversations with the kids, they say funny things. I overall do enjoy my job. That doesn’t mean that I don’t get discouraged, upset, frustrated because Parents make excuses for students, kids get upset when I hold them accountable. I don’t know how to fix it. All I know is that I can continue to encourage my students, teach them manners, and continue to show them how to be the better humans.
Well I am writing this during my planning period so I should go… plan! haha I have so much reading to do this weekend for class so I need to make sure that I have all of the worky things done! Hope you all have a great weekend!
