First week of school!

Happy Saturday! Yes, I started this blog days ago. Yes, I have fallen asleep before I finished it! haha There is nothing like first week of school teacher tired! I slept 10 hours last night. Like straight through. Like didn’t even wake up to move!

First few days went pretty well. For the most part I have some pretty good kids. I am a little concerned about my 6th and 7th period but let’s be honest, we are all tired by then! So it is probably won’t be as bad once they figure out life and once i get my patience back. Or, it will get worse! haha They will need more structure than a few of my other classes. They are still trying to figure out scheduling so there might still be some shifting.

The generosity and heart of a sixth grader just never ceases to amaze me. During orientation I saw kids that I didn’t end up with in class. I mentioned at some point how obsessed I am with stickers and that I stick them on everything. The first day of school a young lady came in with a small sheet of different smiley faces and said “Ms you said during orientation that you really like stickers so I brought you some.” I don’t know which of my colleagues was giving out stickers as prizes for some getting to know you activity on Tuesday but one of my sixth graders won a sticker that said but first coffee and it is adorable it’s got like little green leaves and stuff on it.. it’s a coffee cup. Anyway she came back to class and was like “hey I won this and I know you like coffee and stickers so I wanted to give it to you!” Let me tell you I was so touched!

Earlier this week I gave them blank coffee cup pictures to decorate for our bulletin board. They came out so cute! They did a really good job. I gave the kids a little extra time to finish the getting to know you activity one of the days and if they were finished they could color a science page. This will give me some stuff to put on my walls till we have some work! haha Well a kid was digging through the colored pencil drawer and I asked what color are you looking for. He said “I am looking for Einstein’s skin color!” haha They are struggling to keep up with their punch cards but I hope once I give them journals they will put them in there and we can keep better track of them. Good thing I cut out a bajillion of them last weekend! I need some more things that the kids can buy with their punch cards. I should figure out the store soon! haha That might help them keep up with them better.

A couple activities that I did this week that worked out really well were the getting to the know the teacher card sort. I did it as a station this year and I think next year everyone will do it at once! I had the kids do puzzles that were 100 pieces and it was supposed to be to talk about working as a group. It made some good conversations. I liked the activity! During my 7th period a kid looked at his group and asked “what the hell are you doing?” I turned from what I was doing and just said “WHOA!” He said “Aww my language!?” I just nodded. At the end of class when we were talking about group norms someone said that we needed to speak to each other with respect. The kid that asked what the hell his teammate was doing said “aww I didn’t do that.” We had some good conversations. I am looking forward to this year! It is going to be good!

Well I got some work done for the week. I have lesson plans and my presentations for the week done. Classes start for me this week so I should get some stuff done for that, or I could read a book and just chill! Man lots of things already going on. It is going to be a busy semester! I hope that everyone has a great rest of your weekend! I see a nap coming on! So, how did the first week or couple weeks of school go for you?
