Good afternoon! I hope that everyone is doing well! I have so much to do but it has been so long that I have blogged, and someone pointed it out to me that it was time! Haha So here I am! I got up early and left the house to go to breakfast and here I am taking some time during breakfast to update! The end of the year is exhausting! There is so much going on, awards ceremonies, 9 months of exhaustion catching up, meetings to debrief, meetings to prepare for the next year, cleaning and packing. On top of all that, making sure we keep the kids engaged and occupied. You know what they say “Idle hands are the devil’s workshop” and this time of year the devil is working hard to kill us all! Haha
The kids are crazy! A kid asked me if I liked to eat cat. I told him nah! He said you have never had cat? I told him nah I am allergic to cats! I am pretty sure he was trying to get a rise out of me, I just played dumb! Haha I got yelled at by a parent of a student I didn’t even have! The mom called me a liar and told me to come outside! It was a stressful few minutes! We aren’t letting the students bring backpacks the last 5 days of school. I think that is a good idea! They are already bringing in crazy stuff! The amount of water guns is CRAZY! We didn’t have internet for a couple days and there is about to be an entirely new problem when these kids see their grades. They think that they are entitled to a passing grade because they show up. No my dear. You have to work for that!
Class started this past week. We were supposed to start the week before but she emailed us and decided to push it back a week. I was grateful we did state testing the week before and those days are so draining! I became a teacher to talk and those days all I can do is walk around and watch the students. I couldn’t get my internet to connect that first day. It was 100% my fault, I just assumed that I would be able to join the network and put in my password. No! Thursday I was able to connect. There were some special settings I needed to adjust. So far I am enjoying it. There are only like 10 of us but I am excited. The nerves have subsided some.
Thursday We did our annual egg drop! I have been building up to this awesome day for months! In years past I had a connection at TxDOT. They would bring out a bucket truck (some of you know that as a cherry picker.) Basically a truck with a little bucket that the guy stood in and carried them up and dropped each project individually. The kids loved it. Afterwards they would pull open their projects to see if their egg survived! Some of them didn’t but some of them did! Haha This year I could not get any organization with a bucket truck to either answer or agree to bring it out! I was sad but I thought the city might be able to help. So I went on the city website and started clicking and sent an email that basically said the magic words “it’s for the kids”! Someone from the mayor’s office called me during spring break to tell me that they received my email and they were forwarding it to a couple different people that might be able to help me! The next day I was contacted by Avery, in the middle of a nap, and she told me that she had a great idea! She was with Keep Fort Worth Beautiful. If our school did a beautification project then she could send out a boom truck. I said “DONE!” So our campus did a beautification project where we basically cleaned up trash on the east campus then on Thursday she sent out Jose! Jose was amazing! Just for clarification Jose was the name of the guy operating the truck, I don’t know what they call the truck! The truck that they sent out has a giant claw on it. So the object of the project is for the kids to build some sort of package or covering that would allow an egg to stay safe when dropped from about the height of a 2 story building. We worded it like that in case we couldn’t get a truck. I was told that I could be given roof access! The day of, the students brought in their projects and they were able to put them in the claw and then Jose raised it and then did a little count down and dropped the projects. My favorite is when they hit the ground and you can hear the crunch and then the kids all go “ahhhh” or “awww”. It is by far my favorite day of the year. The students have so much fun with it! I think Jose had a really good time too! I mean not a bad way to spend your day at work right? All of the kids that participated had a great time. I have a kid with 115 absences and he was here Thursday for the egg drop. He hadn’t been there for a week before and then he wasn’t there Friday but he brought a project! Haha It is something that has so much science and is so fun. I will always fight to allow my students to do this project. I saved Jose’s number so I am hoping that next year it won’t take as much to get it going! The boom truck ended up being so much better than a bucket truck. Usually when the kids cut into their projects and we get all that trash I bag it up and have kids walk it to the dumpster. This year our drop zone was FAR from the dumpster so that would have been a pain. Well this boom truck had a dumpster built in. So we bagged up the trash and he just threw it right into the truck and hauled it off! It is my favorite day of the year because even the kids that seem to not care sometimes enjoy doing the project. I also appreciate all of the adults that help make it happen! Honestly I think they enjoy it just as much if not more than the kids! haha

Well I have to finish my reading for class and I have to do some make-up work grading and I should probably do a load or 2 of laundry. You know those Sunday afternoon chores! I hope that everyone has a great afternoon and week!
