So here I am eating dinner at 10 PM on a Thursday night. Let me explain why! Picture this… Sicily! Wait… wrong story! Haha
So the story starts Monday when none of the copy machines in the west wing were working. Pierce was trying to do a card sort. She needed nine copies on nine different colors of cardstock. She couldn’t get any of the 3 machines in the west wing to make copies. so yesterday we went over to the east wing. We made all the copies she got them cut and all she needed was to laminate them. She did her usual tutoring while I scoured the internet for an activity for tomorrow. That’s a whole other story of why I needed to find another activity let’s just say the activity i thought i had, i actually just had the answer key! I found my activity made some copies and Pierce started her laminating. I worked out my assignment for tomorrow to make sure it worked. You know all of the responsible teacher things. Once I was finished with that I started helping Pierce with her cutting so she wouldn’t be there until 3 in the morning!
It was kind of nice you know that mindless laminating cutting which is like shwoop and the scissors go through, it that’s what we were doing. We were just chatting about life, work life, food, you know the normal things. We finished the part of the activity she needs for tomorrow. She had some stuff that she needed for Monday laminated but not all. She ran out of laminator film. I decided let’s just go ahead and cut what she had laminated now so that’s less we have to cut tomorrow. So we continue cutting, we continue talking. We were almost finished with that last bit that we have and she asks “Do you hear something banging?” I said “yeah, who’s working right now”. We stopped talking and we listen and we heard banging and now we hear somebody asking for help. so we get up and we take off out of the room! Pierce definitely has that Mom brain so she was a little more ready to be like “where are you who needs help”. Those of you that know me know I am not the one to call an emergency situation!
Pierce came out of the teachers lounge shouting “where are you who needs help?” And we hear a little voice saying “I’m stuck in the elevator!” So we just looked at each other now what do we do?!!
So I called the principal and had to leave a voicemail because let’s be honest we are pushing 830 now! I thought i stayed pretty calm in my voicemail i just said “let’s forget about the fact that it’s after 8:00 right now and I’m still at school but the custodian is stuck in the elevator!” I hang up with him and call one of the AP’s and I started the same way “hey don’t worry about the fact that I’m telling you I’m still at school listen to what I have to say… the custodian is stuck in the elevator!” She decided to call safety and security. By this time the principal calls me back and decided to call the head custodian.
The custodian in the elevator is like hey go find the other custodian. We’re like hey that’s a good call. so we get downstairs and again Mom brain Pierce just starts calling the other custodian’s name. We met him in the middle hallway. We told him that Shirley was stuck in the elevator. He goes over and he turns the magic key and pushes the button and the button starts flashing at him. he’s like “well it’s never done that to me before” By this time the principal’s gotten a hold of the head custodian who’s still on campus and he comes over trying to figure out what’s going on. Before we call the fire department I call the principal back and updated on what’s going on. He asks “does she not have her phone? isn’t there an emergency number inside the elevator?” I told him “you know what I have no idea what’s going on inside the elevator, I have actually never been in this elevator so I have no idea what the inside of that elevator looks like, I have no idea.
So we ended up calling the fire department to get her out of the elevator. While we waited Pierce and I were cleaning up and packing up because at this point it is really close to 9. We kept going to the elevator asking Shirley if she was ok. The fire department finally got there and got her out! Poor thing came running out of there! She said she was never riding an elevator again! I just hope she comes back to work tomorrow!
I’m not sure what I would do if I was stuck in an elevator! Like j mentioned, I’m not very good in emergency situations. I tend to kind of freeze. I feel like I would have Frozen in the elevator and not used my cell phone either. Good thing Pierce was there tonight. I’m not sure I would have been as helpful! Haha
So just a word of advice, always check if your phone works in an elevator and if it gets stuck call 911!
